Upcoming event (23 August): Dr John Lwanda at The Culture Lab on his seminal work ‘Kamuzu Banda of Malawi’
Join us on Monday 23 August at The Culture Lab with author and social historian Dr John Lwanda, author of seminal work Kamuzu Banda of Malawi: A Study in Promise, Power and Legacy. In conversation, Dr Lwanda will reflect on his groundbreaking study and what it means today.
Dr Lwanda wrote his seminal work back in the early 1990s. And to the surprise of most, had it released when Kamuzu was still president. The book offers a discussion on the inherent qualities and external influences, experiences and factors that made Dr Hastings Kamuzu Banda, the first president of Malawi, the man he was. It examines what events, factors and influences impacted on his behaviour as a politician, and as the ‘father and founder’ of the state of Malawi.
Dr Lwanda is the author of Logos Open Culture’s forthcoming work Making Music in Malawi (2021). In this much-anticipated work, Lwanda sets out to understand the social factors that define Malawi’s music, and the role it plays in society. The book traces how popular and traditional music has been shaped, with attention to particular movements, moments and musicians in Malawi’s history to the present day. It considers how music has been used for nationalist and developmental purposes, in ritual and ceremony, and in prayer, protest and politics. It is crafted from over 20 years of research of music in Malawi.
The event will start at 15.30 at The Culture Lab, Four Seasons, Lilongwe. Space is limited. Call 0996376788 or email muti@logosmw.org to book a seat. The event will be held outside. Covid-19 measures will be adhered to strictly.
