Meet the team behind Logos Open Culture
Chief Operating Officer/Co-director
Muti Etter-Phoya develops product strategy and a roadmap to lead the process from prototyping to deployment. A data scientist, published author and academic, he has been a part of Malawi and Africa’s open landscape since 2005, when he started ‘Portrait Malawi’, a repository for curating Malawi’s heritage. He is in charge of our data science and technology solutions, finance and human resources.
Co-Director
Rachel Etter-Phoya brings her curiosity, creativity and strategic thinking to Logos Open Culture. She is deeply committed to providing deep analysis, developing products, and partnering with other reformers to bring change. She can often be found advocating for social justice and in accountability spaces in Malawi. Rachel is responsible for overseeing the legal compliance and administration of the company.
Chief Researcher
John Lwanda is a physician, social researcher, political historian and writer. An intellectual giant, he has published extensively especially on Malawi’s historical and social front. His PhD was on the dynamics between culture, politics and medicine with reference to the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Malawi. John’s research interests include collecting, archiving and recording popular and traditional music, still photography and collecting Malawi artistic and craft objects, including fabrics.
He is well known for one of Malawi’s seminal works on the country’s first president, Dr Hastings Kamuzu Banda. He leads research to ensure the high quality and impact of our products.
Researcher
Mona is an anthropologist who combines visual methods with archival exploration. Mona’s writing has been published in magazines, journals and news services. She works for Logos Open Culture as one of the many researchers who contributes to the stories we tell through our products. She has an MSc from Oxford University in Social Anthropology and is currently teaching African Studies at the African Leadership Academy in South Africa.
Chief Design Officer/Innovation Architect
Tayo Kopfer is a digital product designer who’s been designing and building compelling things online for the past 3 years. She’s passionate about creating beautiful, useful experiences for the web, and hugely enthusiastic about innovation in digital product design. She is very interested in experimental animation, illustration, semiotics, and exploring hidden corners of the internet.
She is responsible for the technical and design side of product development, including matching market analysis with user experience, and working to provide tailored tech solutions for clients.
